A student discusses pollution for the fifth time in their years of study — who finds that interesting? The lesson

The group votes on what to read: Harry Potter, a recent bestseller, a book from their own profession. In class you work through a chapter — reading, discussing the plot, looking at grammar and turns of phrase inside a living text rather than in a table. The teacher leads the discussion and the analysis. The technical part — translation, audio, dictionary, spaced review — is handled by the app on each student’s phone.

Homework

In an ordinary school homework means “do the exercises”, and everyone hates it. Here homework is one thing: read. You have worked through a chapter in class — now they have three days to read half the book. The student reads not because it was assigned but because they want to know what happens next, and arrives at the next session with something they want to discuss.

The 10/90 split

About 10% of the language work happens in class. The other 90% happens at home, as reading that does not feel like study. Those 90% are what produce the result. Six months on, a group that has spent that time reading books it enjoys is a different group: it understands living language and speaks, because it has something to say.

A mixed group

If the group is international, that is an advantage in itself. Today you read a Spanish book, tomorrow a French one, the day after a German one. Students from those countries tell the others about their culture and their books — and speak more than anyone, and then the roles change. Speaking practice appears on its own, without artificial topics.
